An NRI Marathi marriage is an arranged match with three extra pieces of work: deciding early where the couple will live, getting the paperwork right (marriage registration in India, passports, the spouse visa and, for some families, citizenship and OCI), and checking a life abroad that nobody in your circle has seen. Families who handle those three calmly find that the rest of the process, kande pohe included, works much as it does for a match in Pune or Kolhapur. This guide takes each piece in turn.

Settle the location question first

Before horoscopes, before the first visit, ask one question: where will the couple actually live? Settle abroad for good, return to India in a few years, or keep it open? The answer decides who relocates, whose career pauses, how often the parents will see their children, and which visa the couple needs. Families that leave it for "after the wedding" usually end up having the argument at the worst possible time.

Ask it of the candidate directly, not only of the parents. A candidate abroad who says "we will come back in three years" should be able to say what has to happen for that to be true.

Finding the right NRI match

  • Match on values, not on the visa. A foreign address is attractive, but shared values, family compatibility and a real connection are what hold a marriage together once the novelty of a new country wears off.
  • Search where NRI families actually look. Most NRI candidates and their families search online, because no local register reaches Pune, Pittsburgh and Perth at once. On Vivah Swapn a profile shows both the country a person lives in and their native place, parents or siblings can be added as family managers on the profile, and once both sides accept an interest you can chat and make voice or video calls inside the app without handing out a phone number. Browse NRI Marathi matrimony profiles to see how that looks.
  • Keep the family in India involved. The relatives here can still do what they do best: meet the other family, ask around the native place, and judge the household in person.

Courtship across time zones

  • Schedule regular video calls. Seeing each other, and seeing each other's homes, builds trust that text cannot.
  • Share the inconvenience. Agree on call times that respect both schedules rather than making one person stay up until 2 a.m. every week.
  • Hold family calls too. A video call between the two families, with parents on both sides, is a normal and reassuring part of NRI matchmaking.
  • Meet in person before any commitment. A visit, even a short one, tells you what months of messages cannot. Do not let a two-week trip home turn a first meeting, a sakharpuda and a wedding into one decision.

Distance removes the informal checks a local match gets for free. Our guide to verifying an NRI groom or bride covers the documents to ask for, how to read a visa, and how to check employment and marital status abroad.

Register the marriage in India

This is the single most important step, for the couple's protection and for the spouse visa that follows.

  • In Maharashtra registration is already compulsory. The Maharashtra Regulation of Marriage Bureaus and Registration of Marriages Act, 1998 requires every marriage in the State to be registered. The memorandum is filed with the local Registrar within 90 days of the wedding, and both spouses and three witnesses sign it in person. A marriage can still be registered later with a small penalty, but plan for both spouses to be present before the NRI partner flies back. Our guide to marriage registration in Maharashtra walks through the documents.
  • A court marriage needs a month's notice. Under the Special Marriage Act, notice is given to the Marriage Officer of a district where one partner has lived for at least 30 days, and the marriage can be solemnised only after a further 30 days. NRI couples on a short visit are often caught out by this. See court marriage in Maharashtra.
  • Get the certificate and certified copies. Foreign authorities usually want the certificate apostilled, which the Ministry of External Affairs handles for Indian documents. Ask the destination country's embassy exactly what it needs.

What the law says nationally. In February 2024 the Law Commission of India (Report No. 287) recommended a central law making registration in India compulsory for every marriage between an NRI or OCI cardholder and an Indian citizen, with provisions on divorce, maintenance, custody and serving court papers abroad. It also recommended amending the Passports Act so that passports record marital status and the marriage registration number, and link the spouses' passports. These are recommendations. As of October 2026 Parliament has not passed such a law, and the 2019 bill on registering NRI marriages was never enacted. Registration in India therefore remains your job, and in Maharashtra it is already the law.

Passports, citizenship and OCI

  • India does not allow dual citizenship. An Indian who takes another country's citizenship stops being an Indian citizen. They must surrender the Indian passport and get a surrender certificate, and continuing to travel on the Indian passport is an offence under the Passports Act, 1967. If a candidate says they are a foreign citizen, it is reasonable to ask whether the surrender has been done.
  • Many foreign citizens of Indian origin hold an OCI card. It gives a lifelong visa to India and some rights here, but it is not citizenship and does not give voting rights.
  • A foreign-born spouse can apply for OCI later. The spouse of foreign origin of an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder becomes eligible once the marriage has been registered and has lasted at least two continuous years before the application, subject to a security clearance.
  • The spouse who moves abroad stays Indian. An Indian bride or groom joining a partner on a spouse visa remains an Indian citizen with an Indian passport, unless they later naturalise in that country.
  • Keep names and dates identical everywhere. The passport, the marriage certificate and the visa application must agree to the letter. A one-letter mismatch in a surname can hold up a spouse visa for months, so decide early whether the bride will change her surname and in what order the documents will be updated.
  • Read the spouse visa rules on the official site. Every country sets its own documents, income thresholds, timelines and proof-of-relationship rules, and they change often. Use the official immigration website of that country, not a relative's memory of how it worked in 2019.

Questions families should ask

Beyond the usual conversations, an NRI match needs a few specific ones. Ask both sides, and offer the same information about your own.

  • What visa or residence status does the candidate hold, when does it expire, and can a spouse join them and work there?
  • Is the job permanent or on contract, and what happens to the visa if it ends?
  • What are the realistic plans for visiting India and for caring for parents on both sides?
  • How does the partner who will relocate feel about leaving work, friends and family here?
  • What support exists abroad: relatives, friends, a Marathi mandal, a community?
  • Who will keep the bride's or groom's passport and documents after the move? (The answer should be: the person they belong to.)

These are not signs of distrust. They are the practical conversations that prevent misunderstandings later, and a genuine family abroad will expect them.

If something goes wrong

Most NRI marriages are entirely genuine, but families should know where help is before they need it.

  • The Indian embassy or consulate in the country concerned is the first contact for a person in difficulty abroad. MEA's MADAD portal (madad.gov.in) takes consular grievances online.
  • Indian missions give means-tested legal and financial help to Indian women deserted, cheated or abused by an overseas spouse, through the Indian Community Welfare Fund. Eligibility rules, such as how long after the marriage you can apply, are set out by the mission, so ask it directly.
  • The National Commission for Women's NRI Cell has been the national coordinating agency for complaints about NRI marriages since 2009. It takes complaints from women in India and abroad about desertion, dowry demands, domestic violence and passport confiscation.
  • Online fraud (a fake "NRI" profile asking for money, a customs or gift-parcel demand) is reported at cybercrime.gov.in or on the national helpline 1930. Call quickly: the sooner a transfer is reported, the better the chance of stopping it.
  • Getting an absconding spouse's Indian passport impounded generally needs a case and an order from a criminal court in India, so involve a lawyer who has handled cross-border matrimonial cases.

Frequently asked questions

Is it compulsory to register an NRI marriage in India? In Maharashtra, yes: the 1998 Act requires every marriage in the State to be registered, NRI or not. There is no separate central law for NRI marriages yet, although the Law Commission recommended one in 2024. Register before the NRI partner leaves, because both spouses normally have to appear.

Can my daughter keep her Indian citizenship after moving abroad? Yes. Joining a husband on a spouse or partner visa does not affect Indian citizenship. It ends only if she later takes that country's citizenship, at which point she would surrender her Indian passport and could apply for an OCI card.

How long does a spouse visa take? It depends entirely on the country, the visa category and the sponsor's own status. Check the official immigration website of that country for current processing times, and do not book a departure date on someone else's experience.

Can a foreign-born husband or wife get OCI? Yes, once the marriage to an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder has been registered and has lasted at least two continuous years before the application, subject to a security clearance.

Where can a woman deserted by an NRI husband get help? The Indian mission in that country, the NCW's NRI Cell, the District Legal Services Authority for free legal aid in Maharashtra, and a lawyer experienced in cross-border cases. Keep copies of the marriage certificate, passports and all messages.

A marriage across two countries

An NRI Marathi marriage joins two families and, often, two countries. With the location question settled early, honest conversations on video and in person, a registered marriage and documents that agree with each other, the distance becomes a practical problem rather than a frightening one.

This is general information, not legal or immigration advice. Rules change; confirm current requirements with the relevant office or a qualified professional before you act.
