To say no to a marriage proposal politely, say it soon, say it once, and say it through the same channel the proposal came from. Thank the family, state the decision plainly ("we will not be taking this forward"), wish them well, and leave out any reason they could argue with. That is the whole method. The rest of this guide covers timing, who should speak, ready-to-send messages in English and Marathi for each stage, and what to do when you are the one being declined.

Every family that looks for a match says no far more often than yes. A no is not an insult and it does not need to be dressed up as one. What hurts people is not the refusal. It is the silence before it, the vague "we will let you know" that never ends, and the reason that sounds like a verdict on their son or daughter.

When to say no

As soon as you know. A family waiting on your answer is often holding other proposals back, and every week you take is a week out of their search.

  • After seeing the biodata: within two or three days. If the answer is no on paper, it will not change, so there is no reason to sit on it.
  • After the kande pohe meeting: nobody expects an answer at the door. Take a day or two, talk it over at home, then reply. Our kande pohe meeting guide covers that conversation.
  • After several meetings or weeks of talking: the moment you are sure. Hesitation at this stage is normal, but drifting is not. If you have stopped replying with the same warmth, the other person has already noticed, and a clear message is kinder than a slow fade.

The worst answer is no answer. Silence leaves a family guessing for weeks, and in a small community word travels.

Who should say it: the family or the person

Follow the line the proposal travelled along.

  • It came through a mediator or a vadhu-var suchak mandal: reply to them. They made the introduction and they know how to pass on a no without bruising anyone.
  • The parents have done all the talking: the parents reply, parent to parent. The son or daughter does not need to call.
  • The two of you have been talking directly: say it yourself. After weeks of phone calls, hearing the news from someone's father feels like being dropped through a side door. Tell your parents first, then tell the person, and let the families exchange a short word afterwards if they wish.

Whoever speaks, make sure the decision is actually settled at home first. Nothing is more awkward than a parent saying no and the son messaging "let's still talk" the same evening.

What a polite no contains

Four parts, in this order:

  1. Thanks for the proposal, the time, the hospitality.
  2. The decision, in words that cannot be read as "maybe": "we will not be taking this forward", not "let us see".
  3. No reason, or one neutral reason. "We do not feel it is the right match" is complete. You owe courtesy, not a justification.
  4. Good wishes for their search.

A phone call is the most respectful way when the families have met. A WhatsApp message is fine after a biodata exchange or when that is how you have been talking. A short call followed by a message works well when a mediator is involved.

Sample messages for each stage

Change the names and tone to suit your family. Each one is written to be sent as it is.

After the biodata, before any meeting

English:

Namaskar. Thank you for sending [Name]'s biodata and for thinking of our family. We have discussed it at home and feel it is not the right match for us, so we will not be taking it forward. We wish [Name] all the very best.

Marathi:

After the kande pohe meeting

English:

Namaskar. Thank you for the warm welcome on Sunday; we enjoyed meeting all of you. After talking it over, we feel this match is not the right one for [Name], and we did not want to keep you waiting. We wish [Name] and your family the very best.

Marathi:

After several meetings or weeks of talking

This one comes from the person, not the parents.

English:

Hi [Name], I have really valued our conversations these past few weeks, and I wanted to tell you this directly rather than let it drift. I have thought about it carefully and I do not see us as the right match for marriage. That is not a judgement on you; it is just not the fit I am looking for. I hope you find the right person soon.

Marathi:

When there is a fact-based reason you want to state

Sometimes a reason is a fact, not a judgement: you will not move abroad, the families disagree on where the couple will live, the kundli was a condition and it did not match. A fact like that can be said, briefly:

We are looking for someone settled in Pune, and since [Name] plans to stay in Germany, we feel it will not work for either side. Thank you, and best wishes.

If the other side has asked for dowry, you can decline without any softening. Demanding dowry is itself an offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961; our guide to dowry law and wedding costs explains what counts.

What not to say

  • Anything about looks. Complexion, weight, height, teeth, glasses. It will be repeated, and it will hurt for years.
  • Comparisons with other proposals. "We have a better offer" turns a no into a ranking.
  • Comments on their family's status, house or income. Even if that is the reason.
  • "Patrika jamli nahi" when it is not true. It is the most common polite reason in Maharashtra, and it works because it blames nobody. But if the other family matched the kundli themselves and it was fine, they will know.
  • "We will let you know" when you already know. It keeps them waiting and the answer is the same.
  • Promises to stay in touch. "Let's be friends" sounds kind but usually is not wanted.
  • The details, to anyone else. Do not discuss the other person with relatives or the mandal network beyond "it did not work out".

When they ask for a reason, or ask again

Some families push back, especially after a meeting that went well on their side. Hold one calm sentence and repeat it: "We have thought about it carefully, and we feel it is not the right match." You do not have to produce a new reason each time they ask. If a mediator keeps pressing, the same sentence goes to the mediator.

If you are being pressed by your own family to say yes, that is a different conversation, and it is worth having before anyone replies to the other side. Saying no to a match is easier than saying no to a marriage.

How to take a no gracefully

Being declined stings, more so after a meeting you thought went well. A few things help:

  • Reply once, with thanks. "Thank you for letting us know, and best wishes" closes it with dignity.
  • Do not ask why. Even if they tell you, the answer rarely helps and often wounds.
  • Do not argue or try again through relatives. A no passed back through an aunt is still a no, and pushing turns a polite family into an awkward one.
  • Do not read it as a verdict. People decline for reasons that have nothing to do with you: a horoscope, a city, a parent's preference, another proposal that moved faster.
  • Parents, protect your child's confidence. Do not relay every refusal word for word. "They have decided not to go ahead" is enough.

On a matrimony site the same rules apply in a smaller form. On Vivah Swapn, declining an interest is one button: the sender sees it as declined and cannot send you another interest for 30 days, though you can still send one yourself if you change your mind. No message is needed, but after a long conversation a short note is still kind.

Frequently asked questions

Is it rude to decline a marriage proposal on WhatsApp? Not after a biodata exchange, or when WhatsApp is how the families have been talking. After a meeting at home, a short phone call is more respectful, and a message can follow it.

Do we have to give a reason? No. "We do not feel it is the right match" is a complete answer. Give a reason only when it is a neutral fact, such as location, and never one about looks or status.

How long can we take before replying? Two or three days after a biodata, a day or two after a kande pohe meeting. If you genuinely need more time, say so and give a date: "We will reply by Saturday."

Can we say no after the sakharpuda? Yes, though it is harder, and the elders of both families usually need to talk. It is still far better than a marriage one side does not want. Say it as early as possible and in person.

What if they do not reply to our no? Nothing more is needed. A polite no does not require an acknowledgement.
