How much does a Marathi wedding cost in 2026-27? For a simple one-day wedding of 300 guests at a Pune mangal karyalay, the hall, food, photographer, makeup and mehendi come to roughly ₹1.8 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh at rates vendors listed in October 2026. Clothes and gold come on top, and gold alone can cost more than everything else: 22-carat gold was about ₹1.36 lakh per 10 grams on 19 October 2026. Banquet halls, Mumbai venues and a second reception push the total up quickly. This post breaks the budget down line by line, with the source and date of every figure, and shows where families actually save.

Prices here are what vendors published on listing sites or what newspapers reported, checked in October 2026. They are a starting point for your own quotes, not a rate card. Ask every vendor for a written quote that says what is included and whether tax is extra.

The national average, and why it misleads

WedMeGood's 2025 wedding report, a survey of more than 2,000 couples marrying between April 2025 and March 2026, put the all-India average at ₹39.5 lakh and Mumbai at ₹35 lakh (Outlook Money, 12 December 2025). It also found that about 79% paid mainly from savings and 15% took loans, and that an average local wedding had 420 guests.

Those figures come from couples using a wedding-planning platform, and they include destination and luxury weddings. Most Marathi families in Pune, Mumbai and the district towns spend far less. Use the line items below, not the average, to build your budget.

Hall and catering: the biggest part of the bill

Food is charged per plate, so the guest list decides this line more than anything else.

City What we found (October 2026) Source
Pune, traditional karyalay ₹275 veg per plate (Shaniwar Peth), ₹400 veg per plate (Bavdhan); booking amounts of ₹50,000 and ₹70,000; 18% tax on food Weddingz.in listings
Pune, small hall ₹50,000 rent per event for an 80-seat hall in Hadapsar, food from ₹400 a plate WedMeGood listing
Pune and PCMC, banquets and lawns ₹450 to ₹2,499 veg per plate; non-veg ₹749 to ₹2,450 WedMeGood Pune venues page
Mumbai, banquets and hotels ₹500 per plate (Chembur banquet) to ₹3,000 (Andheri hotel) Weddingz.in Mumbai page
Nashik ₹80,000 rent per function for a 150-seat karyalay in Panchavati, taxes extra; lawns and hotels ₹500 to ₹2,200 per plate WedMeGood, Weddingz.in

Three things to check before you sign:

  • Is the booking amount rent or an advance? Many Pune karyalays ask for a booking amount and run their own kitchen. Ask whether that amount is adjusted against the food bill or charged on top.
  • Can you bring your own caterer? Some karyalays allow no outside food or caterer. Others allow only outside caterers. This decides whether you can shop around on the per-plate rate.
  • Is tax included? Listings commonly add 18% tax on food. On a ₹1.2 lakh food bill that is another ₹21,600.

We could not find published hall rents for Kolhapur, Satara or Ahilyanagar. In those towns, ask two or three karyalays for written quotes on the same date and compare.

A worked example: 300 guests at a Pune karyalay

This is arithmetic from the rates above, not a survey. It covers one wedding day.

Line Low High
Food, 300 plates at ₹275 to ₹600, plus 18% tax ₹97,350 ₹2,12,400
Hall booking ₹50,000 ₹70,000
Photographer, one day ₹15,000 ₹35,000
Bridal makeup, one function ₹5,000 ₹25,000
Mehendi ₹2,000 ₹2,000+
Basic decoration ₹10,000 ₹10,000+
Total about ₹1.8 lakh about ₹3.5 lakh

Not included: the priest, clothes, jewellery, invitations, the sakharpuda and haldi, a reception, travel and stay for guests. A second reception at a banquet charging ₹1,000 a plate adds ₹3 lakh plus tax for 300 guests.

Priest and rituals

We found no published rate for a Marathi guruji's dakshina in Pune that we could verify, and that matches how most gurujis work: by private arrangement. The amount depends on which rituals they conduct (devdevak, simant pujan, the vivah homa, saptapadi and others), how many hours, how many assistant priests, and whether the puja samagri is included. Ask for a written list of rituals and one total, and ask whether the samagri is in it.

Photography and video

Pune photographers on WedMeGood list photo packages from ₹15,000 a day (Shivajinagar) to ₹35,000 a day (Katraj), with pre-wedding shoots around ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 and an album of 40 pages at ₹10,000. Candid teams with video charge more. Ask for the number of photographers, hours, edited photos delivered, and whether the album and video are separate items.

Clothes: paithani, nauvari and the groom

  • Paithani. Machine-made paithani sells for a few thousand rupees. A handloom silk paithani costs many times that. When The Hindu visited Yeola's shops in 2018, price tags ran from ₹6,000 to ₹5 lakh, and silk and zari have become dearer since. Ask the shop whether a saree is handloom or powerloom, and look for the Paithani GI tag on a genuine handloom piece.
  • Nauvari. Ready-stitched bridal nauvaris are widely sold, so you no longer need to buy nine yards and find someone to drape it.
  • The groom. A dhoti or kurta with a pheta for the wedding, often a sherwani or suit for the reception. Both sherwanis and phetas can be rented as well as bought, so compare the two.

Clothes for both families and the aaher, the clothes given to relatives, add up quickly. Write them down as one line with a limit.

Jewellery

Gold is priced by weight, so work it out instead of guessing:

cost = weight × day's 22K rate + making charges + 3% GST

On 19 October 2026 the 22K rate was ₹13,570 a gram, or ₹1,35,700 per 10 grams (Goodreturns). So every 10 grams of 22K jewellery costs about ₹1.36 lakh before making charges and tax. Making charges vary by jeweller and design, so compare them in writing.

The traditional Marathi bridal set (mangalsutra, thushi, nath, mundavalya, jodvi and bangles) can be made in many weights. Decide the grams first, then the designs. Jewellery the bride receives is her stridhan. Our guide on dowry law and wedding expenses explains where a gift ends and a demand begins.

Rukhwat

We found no reliable published price for rukhwat. Its cost depends on what the family puts in it: the traditional sweets and savouries, the decorated items the bride and her family make, and household gifts. Many families make most of it at home with the women of the house, which keeps the cost close to the price of materials. Set a limit early, because rukhwat is where comparison with other families quietly raises spending.

Who pays

There is no single correct split. Some families host by tradition, others split by function or by headcount, and more couples now pay part themselves. What matters is agreeing it in one conversation before the bookings start, with the couple in the room.

Where families save

  • Cut the guest list. Every 100 guests at ₹400 a plate is ₹47,200 with tax. Nothing else saves as much.
  • Choose a karyalay with in-house food for the wedding day and keep the reception small, or combine them.
  • Ask about other dates. Venue listings say prices can vary by season, date and guest count. A non-muhurat or weekday date may get a better quote.
  • Fix the gold in grams, not in pieces, and compare making charges.
  • Buy one paithani that matters, and wear family sarees or semi-handloom pieces for the other functions.
  • Make the rukhwat at home and borrow decorations within the family.
  • Look at a samuhik vivah if you are eligible. Under the Kanyadan and Shubhmangal Samuhik Vivah schemes, eligible families are to receive ₹25,000 per couple by direct transfer, provided the marriage is registered (Sakal, 19 October 2026). Confirm the current rules with your district office; our page on Maharashtra marriage schemes explains how they work.

Our wedding planning checklist gives the month-by-month order in which to book all of this.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cost of a Marathi wedding? There is no reliable Marathi-specific average. The WedMeGood survey put Mumbai at ₹35 lakh, but its sample leans to larger weddings. At October 2026 rates, a simple 300-guest Pune karyalay wedding costs about ₹1.8 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh for the hall, food, photography, makeup and mehendi, before clothes and gold.

What is the per-plate rate at a Pune mangal karyalay? In October 2026, listings showed ₹275 to ₹600 for veg at traditional karyalays and ₹450 to ₹2,499 at banquets and lawns, usually plus 18% tax.

What takes the biggest share of the budget? Usually jewellery and food. Gold depends on weight; food depends on the number of guests.

Is a court or registered marriage cheaper? Yes, much cheaper, because there is no hall or catering. Many couples register and then host a small meal.

When should we book the hall? In the wedding season, popular Pune karyalays book early for muhurat dates. Fix the date with your priest and book the hall first, then the caterer and photographer.
