A person is called Manglik when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of their birth chart. This placement is called Mangal dosha. Astrologers check it from the ascendant (lagna), and many also check it from the Moon and from Venus. It is assessed separately from the 36-guna score. Traditionally a Manglik is matched with another Manglik, and the tradition also lists conditions under which the dosha is considered cancelled. Because six of the twelve houses count, it is far more common than most families assume.

Few words cause as much quiet worry in marriage talks as "Manglik". One line in a kundli report can stall a promising match or send a family looking for remedies. Much of that worry comes from not knowing what the term covers. This guide explains it plainly.

What Mangal dosha means

In Jyotish, Mars is associated with energy, drive and temper. The traditional concern is that a strongly placed Mars, if one partner has it and the other does not, brings friction into married life. That is why the placement is examined before a marriage.

The rule is about houses. Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is read as Mangal dosha. Drik Panchang's Mangal dosha calculator, for example, checks all three reference points and treats a person as non-Manglik only when none of the lagna, Moon and Venus charts shows the placement. It also grades the strength: Mars in the 7th or 8th weighs more than Mars in the 12th.

Why Manglik is more common than people think

On the simplest reading, six of the twelve houses count. So roughly half of all charts can come out Manglik from the ascendant alone, and more when the Moon and Venus are checked too. Being Manglik is ordinary. It is not rare, and it is not a mark against a person.

Astrologers also distinguish intensity. You will hear terms like anshik (partial) Manglik for a mild placement and purna (full) Manglik for a strong one, though the terms and the cut-offs vary. The house, the sign and other planets' influence on Mars all change how much weight the placement carries. A blanket "Manglik, so no" ignores all of that.

How Manglik matching works

The common rule is that a Manglik should marry a Manglik: the two placements are said to balance each other. Many families and astrologers advise against matching a Manglik with a non-Manglik, though practice varies.

The tradition also recognises conditions under which the dosha is considered reduced or cancelled (Mangal dosha parihar). The ones usually cited involve Mars in its own or exalted sign, certain houses and signs together, or the influence of benefic planets. Different texts list different conditions. Whether any of them applies is a judgement for an astrologer reading the whole chart, not something a one-line app report can settle.

You will also hear that Mangal dosha weakens after the age of 28. This is a popular belief. Astrologers do not all accept it, so ask your own astrologer rather than relying on it.

Manglik and guna milan are separate

Mangal dosha is not one of the eight koots, and it is not counted in the 36 gunas. A high guna score does not settle a Manglik mismatch, and a low one says nothing about it. If Manglik status matters to your family, ask for both checks. Our guide to kundli matching and 36 guna milan explains the score, and Nadi dosha and Bhakoot covers the two koots that cause most low scores.

Common remedies

Families who want to address Mangal dosha traditionally turn to:

  • Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or mantras for Mangal
  • Fasting on Tuesdays
  • A Mangal shanti puja before the wedding
  • A symbolic ceremony before the actual wedding, such as a kumbh vivah, in some traditions

These are matters of faith and family choice, and for those who follow them they bring real peace of mind. It is reasonable to ask what a remedy involves and costs before agreeing to it, and to be wary of anyone who presents an expensive package as the only way forward.

A calm way to handle it

If Manglik status matters to your family:

  1. Get the chart read properly by an astrologer you trust, rather than relying on a quick app result.
  2. Ask about intensity and cancellation. A mild placement, or one the tradition considers cancelled, is a different matter from a strong one.
  3. Raise it early. Find out in the first round of enquiries whether the other family checks Mangal dosha, so nobody learns of it after months of meetings.
  4. Weigh it alongside everything else that makes a marriage work: character, values and respect.

Many happy marriages include a Manglik partner, with or without remedies. Treated calmly, Mangal dosha is one consideration among many, not a reason to walk away from someone who is otherwise right.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I am Manglik? An astrologer, or a reliable calculator, checks whether Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your chart, counted from the ascendant and often also from the Moon and Venus. You need your exact birth date, time and place.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik? Many traditions advise against it unless the dosha is considered cancelled or mild. Plenty of families do proceed after an astrologer's assessment, sometimes with remedies. It is a family decision.

Is Mangal dosha part of the 36 gunas? No. It is checked separately from guna milan.

Does Mangal dosha end at 28? That is a popular belief, not a rule every astrologer follows.

What is Manglik called in Marathi? Mars is मंगळ in Marathi. A Manglik person is called मांगलिक, and families usually just say the patrika has मंगळ ("मंगळ आहे").
