In a Hindu wedding, astrology does two separate jobs: kundli matching decides whether two charts suit each other, and the muhurat decides when the wedding should happen. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha come from the first job and are the two heaviest parts of the 36-guna score, worth 8 and 7 points. The muhurat comes from the panchang: the nakshatra, the Sun's month, tithi, yoga, karana and weekday. The rituals themselves, from haldi to saptapadi, carry meaning in their own right, and many of the "scientific" explanations circulated for them do not hold up.

This post covers all three, with links to our longer guides where a topic needs more room.

The importance of muhurat in Hindu weddings

For families who follow the tradition, the muhurat is the moment the marriage is solemnised, chosen so that the panchang is favourable. A guruji works through it in layers:

  • The solar month. Whole stretches of the year are avoided: Chaturmas, from Devshayani (Ashadhi) Ekadashi to Prabodhini (Kartiki) Ekadashi, and in many panchangs the months when the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena.
  • Venus and Jupiter. Weddings are traditionally not held while Shukra or Guru is asta (set, too close to the Sun to be seen).
  • The day itself. A nakshatra suited to weddings (Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati), with a suitable tithi, yoga, karana and weekday.
  • The couple. The chosen day is checked against both birth charts.

Families who follow the tradition hold that a marriage begun at a good muhurat starts well. In practice the muhurat also sets the rhythm of the whole year: halls, caterers and priests are booked around the same dates. Our shubh vivah muhurat 2027 list gives every date for next year, and Maharashtra's wedding seasons explains why some months have none.

Understanding Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha: meaning and remedies

In Ashtakoot guna milan, Nadi and Bhakoot carry the highest weights, 8 and 7 of the 36 points. Both score all or nothing, so together they can take 15 points away in one stroke.

  • Nadi dosha. Every birth nakshatra falls in one of three Nadi groups: Aadi, Madhya or Antya. If the bride and groom fall in the same group, Nadi scores 0 and the match is said to have Nadi dosha. The tradition links Nadi to the couple's health and to progeny. It is a traditional belief, and it is not a genetic test: Nadi is worked out from the Moon's position at birth, not from anything in the body.
  • Bhakoot dosha. This is worked out from the two moon signs. When they sit 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 signs apart, Bhakoot scores 0. The tradition links Bhakoot to the emotional bond and the prosperity of the household.

The same tradition lists conditions under which either dosha is considered cancelled (parihar), for example certain combinations of the two moon signs, nakshatras and their ruling planets. A dosha flagged on a score sheet is therefore not always a dosha confirmed by an astrologer reading both charts. Our post on Nadi dosha, Bhakoot and the doubts that follow kundli matching goes through what to ask.

Remedies. Families who wish to address these doshas commonly turn to a Nadi dosha nivaran puja, recitation of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, charity such as donating grain and clothes, or worship of Shiva and Parvati. Some astrologers also suggest gemstones. These are matters of faith and family choice. Ask what a remedy involves and what it costs before agreeing, and be cautious with anyone who presents an expensive package as the only way forward.

Mangal dosha is a separate check, outside the 36 gunas. See What is Manglik? for how it is assessed.

What the rituals mean, and the "science" claims around them

Messages that forward round family WhatsApp groups often say every wedding ritual has a hidden scientific purpose. Some of these claims are harmless, some are unfounded, and one can be harmful. The rituals do not need that kind of justification. Their meaning is in what they say about the marriage.

  • Haldi (turmeric). Applying haldi to the bride and groom is a blessing and a beautifying ritual, and in a Marathi wedding it is one of the most joyful family moments. Turmeric has a long place in Indian home remedies, and its main compound, curcumin, is widely studied. But the claim that haldi before a wedding "boosts immunity before the crowds" has no evidence behind it. Enjoy it for what it is.
  • The sacred fire and saptapadi. The couple's vows are taken before Agni as witness, and in the saptapadi they take seven steps together, each with its own promise. This is not only symbolic. Under section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, where the rites include saptapadi, the marriage becomes complete and binding when the seventh step is taken. Claims that circling the fire produces a measurable "meditative state" are an add-on with no basis.
  • Kunku and sindoor. For a married Marathi woman the kunku on the forehead, and in many families sindoor in the hair parting, marks her as married. Traditional kunku and sindoor were made from turmeric and slaked lime. The widely forwarded claim that sindoor at the parting acts on the pituitary gland, controls blood pressure or affects desire has no scientific support. Worse, some commercial vermilion is made from cinnabar, a mercury compound, and some has been found to contain red lead. Both are toxic. Buy from a brand you trust and avoid products of unknown make.

Frequently asked questions

Is muhurat the same as kundli matching? No. Kundli matching compares the two people's charts with each other. The muhurat is the date and time of the wedding, chosen from the panchang and then checked against both charts.

Are Nadi and Bhakoot dosha the same as Mangal dosha? No. Nadi and Bhakoot are two of the eight koots in the 36-guna score. Mangal dosha concerns the position of Mars and is assessed separately.

Does Nadi dosha mean the couple will have health problems? That is the traditional belief, but Nadi is calculated from the Moon's position at birth, not from blood groups or genes. If health or heredity is a real concern, a doctor and the relevant medical tests are the right place to start.

Is there science behind sindoor? The pituitary and blood-pressure claims are not supported. What is documented is a risk: some vermilion contains mercury or lead, so the product you buy matters.
