For many Marathi families, kundli matching is one of the first steps once a match looks promising. Two birth charts are compared, points are awarded, and a number out of 36 decides whether the families move ahead. If you have ever wondered what that number actually measures, this guide breaks it down.
What kundli matching is
Kundli matching, or guna milan, compares the birth charts (kundli) of the prospective bride and groom based on the position of the Moon and its nakshatra at birth. The traditional system, called Ashtakoota, evaluates eight factors and assigns a total score out of 36 points, or gunas.
The higher the score, the more harmonious the match is considered to be - though, as we will see, the number is only part of the picture.
The eight kootas
Each of the eight factors carries a different weight:
- Varna (1 point) - spiritual compatibility and ego balance.
- Vashya (2 points) - mutual attraction and the give-and-take of influence.
- Tara (3 points) - health and well-being of the couple.
- Yoni (4 points) - physical and intimate compatibility.
- Graha Maitri (5 points) - mental compatibility and friendship.
- Gana (6 points) - temperament and nature.
- Bhakoot (7 points) - emotional bond and family welfare.
- Nadi (8 points) - health and genetic compatibility, considered the most important.
Add them up and you get a score out of 36.
How many gunas are enough?
This is the question every family asks. A common guideline:
- Below 18: traditionally considered a weak match.
- 18 to 24: an acceptable, average match.
- 25 to 32: a very good match.
- 33 to 36: rare and considered excellent.
Most well-matched couples fall in the 18 to 32 range. A perfect 36 is uncommon and not necessary for a happy marriage.
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha
Two factors carry extra weight in traditional matching:
- Nadi dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi. Because Nadi relates to health and progeny, this is taken seriously, though astrologers note that certain combinations cancel the dosha (Nadi dosha parihar).
- Bhakoot dosha relates to emotional and financial harmony and can also be cancelled under specific conditions.
A low total score is often driven by one of these doshas rather than across-the-board incompatibility - which is why a good astrologer looks beyond the headline number.
Where Manglik fits in
Manglik status (Mangal dosha) is assessed separately from the 36-guna score. A high guna count does not automatically clear a Manglik mismatch, and vice versa. If Manglik status matters to your family, it should be checked alongside guna milan, not assumed from it.
Tradition and compatibility together
Guna milan has guided Marathi marriages for generations, and for many families it brings reassurance and a sense of cultural continuity. At the same time, a number out of 36 cannot measure shared values, communication, ambition, or how two people treat each other day to day.
The healthiest approach is to treat kundli matching as one meaningful input - respected, consulted, and discussed with a trusted astrologer - while still spending time getting to know the person and their family. A strong score is a good start; genuine understanding is what carries a marriage forward.
When you begin a conversation on Vivah Swapn, you can share birth details for matching while also getting to know each other through honest questions. Tradition and compatibility are not rivals - the best matches honour both.
